Types of Bees
Most people commonly associate bees with their telltale buzzing, stinging and of course, honey. But not all bees make honey, and some of them don’t even buzz loudly. Did you know that there are nearly 20,000 known different types of bees species?
Bees play a significant role in the natural environment (as pollinators that propagate biodiversity), and are often found in or around human settlements as well. Bees are mostly harmless, but can sometimes be a threat to the buildings and people nearby.
Bee stings can cause swelling, and even anaphylactic shock. Many often get into medical trouble because of a lack of awareness of bees and their habits. It is always better to be able to identify a few common types of bees.

Some of the different types of bees have been mentioned below:

- Bumble Bees
Do bumblebees sting? Yes, these inch-long, fuzzy, black-and-yellow bees do sting, and that too multiple times. But don’t worry, if you do not disturb their nest, they will not sting. They build their nests on the ground and are important pollinators.
These solitary bees are blue-black in color and get their name from their ability to bore holes in wood (where they nurture their young). Carpenter bees do not sting unless their home is threatened. They are beneficial insects as they pollinate the honeybee-ignored plants. They can, however, cause structural damages to furniture and buildings.
- Honey Bees
Honeybees are highly social insects that are golden-yellow and black in color. Their wings flap so fast they sound like they are ‘buzzing’. Honeybees produce honey to feed their young in winter. They are chief pollinators and are highly necessary for the maintenance of the ecological balance. Honeybees sting, but only once (they die after stinging).
- Killer Bees
Killer bees are Africanized honeybees (only the wingspan differs). They tend to attack in more significant numbers and can chase the threat over vast distances if aggravated. Their venom, however, is no more dangerous than that of the honeybee. Killer bees sting only once.
Bees are quite common in Florida, and can often be a source of danger. Honeybees, specifically, are extremely common and are usually considered as pests. Having a honeybee hive near the house can be risky and worrisome.
How to Deal with a Honeybee Hive
- The best option is to call reliable pest control or beekeeping service.
- Do not try to destroy the hive – chances are you will get stung very badly.
- Leave the beehive alone, and keep children and pets far away from it.
- Do not spray insecticide on it (most of the bees will survive and will come to attack you).
- Do not try to smoke out the hive – this will not only be unsuccessful but will also cause the bees to get more aggressive.
